If the pattern fits the size of the canvas you should not have any problem. Some times you can clip some of the four sides to make it fit if it does not seem to make too much difference in the picture. You may want to check to see if you can buy larger plastic some place.

I think that stitch for stitch it is the same. The only thing I would be aware of is the scale. In other words make sure that you have enough canvas to finish the entire project. It would be a shame to do 90% of the piece to find out your missing five rows of canvas to finish the project on.

For many years I have used cross st and needlepoint patterns for plastic canvas and also latch hook rugs. Some times the size of the pattern graph itself will make a difference in the finished item as you need to measure closely to make sure the hole numbers of the pattern won't be off or you'll end up with a pattern that is longer then in the graphed design. If you have half sts you can still use it, you just need to do the half st over the top of the finished stitching as well as any 3 dimensional sts. It gives the finished item a nice effect and I'm sure you would like they way they look.

You can use a cross stitch chart for plastic canvas however the chart would have to be for full cross stitch no fractional stitches.
Also as Pamela stated be aware of the sizing. If it is 14 count plastic canvas then you would be ok to use a 14 count chart it would be the same size.
With 10 count canvas using a 14 count chart the design would be larger.
Hope this helps.
